Tulip’s Suggestions for ‘Irene’
Hi Everyone
It’s me, Tulip. I’m sure you’ve heard by now that we are getting a hurricane or at least a tropical storm. I just wanted to remind you of a few safety tips before it gets here. Personally, I’m a little nervous. I hate bad weather it scares me. Maybe I’ll sleep with my mother tonight, or a least lay by her while I pant. Did you know that the best way to handle storms with dogs is to show confidence in the situation and give them reassurance? Please don’t scare us more. I knew of one lady that held her dog under the covers until the storm went by, no wonder her dog was scared.
Anyhow, back to my list:
Plan ahead. You may be without power for a few days, so have some canned or kibble (I can’t believe I said that) on hand.
If you’re a raw feeder, keep the freezer door closed. Food will stay frozen for days, no peeking. You can also fill the freezer with bags of water – as they freeze it creates a block of ice and if necessary you/I can drink it.
Fill our water bowls and keep a gallon of clean water on hand.
Bring us in, even the cat; I can’t wait to have fun with her.
If we need to go out, please leash us. We can be startled and run off in the confusion and loud noises.
Extra chew treats would be great to keep our minds busy
If you crate us and we’re nervous, you may try covering the crate with a blanket, like a bird
Now for the humans:
Keep Emergency numbers handy, including emergency vet care
Charge your cell phone
Plug in your old landline phone
Fill the bathtub with water; you can use it to fill the toilet
Batteries, batteries, batteries
Keep generators away from the house. It wouldn’t hurt to test run it before the storm
Finally, I trust that you are in control and will handle this hurricane like you always do, calm and with a sense of humor
Cheers for now
Tulip
